Electric power steering (EPAS) has been making its way into all kinds of cars for over a decade. This includes the Mustang going back to the introduction of the Coyote engine back in 2011. EPAS offers several advantages over standard hydraulic systems. The biggest stem from the lack of fluid used for the system. There’s no lines, no pump, and easier packaging for other components.

Classic Mustang owners can benefit from electric power steering as well. CJ Pony Parts recently installed an electric power steering system on their Project 50/30 Mustang. The kit CJ installs is from EPAS performance.

The beauty of this system is that it is compatible with either an old school style steering box, or a steering rack. The EPAS unit installs in the steering column and fits under the dash of the car. It works with the stock column.

In the video highlighting this system, CJ Pony Parts’ Bill Tumas goes through the highlights of the install. The steering column must be disassembled, and the lower portion cut away. The unit requires only a few simple electrical connections. It’s a project that most of us should be able to tackle over a weekend.
