Video: The New AWD Rivals – Golf R Vs. Impreza WRX STi

The words All-Wheel-Drive have been synonymous with the names Subaru Impreza WRX STI and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution as they have dominated that performance class for quite some time. Both models are very similar in layout, performance numbers, and aftermarket support, so it was up to the owner’s preference to decide between the two models.

With Mitsubishi on a slow fade, pulling out the performance sedan market by discontinuing the Evolution X back in 2014, Subaru looked to be left by themselves to take over the all-wheel-drive market. Good things don’t last, because Volkswagen has jumped back into the game with its new all-wheel-drive Golf R.

In the past, Volkswagen introduced the Golf R32, which was aimed at the STi and Evolution, but performance numbers and figures remained at the WRX and Lancer Ralliart level. This time around, VW’s Golf R has the performance numbers to rival the STi and the discontinued Evolution X. The Golf R features a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine producing 292 horsepower, which is channeled through a six-speed automatic DSG transmission equipped with launch control. While the current STi features a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine producing 305 horsepower and a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, the Golf R is right on its heels with performance and features.

The biggest difference between the two machines is refinement. While the STi is the always ready to hit the streets and canyons type of car, the Golf R is more of the I just left the office lets take the longer route home type of car. If you are looking for a performance minded all-wheel-drive car with all the gadgets and gizmos, then the STi would be your pick. If you’re in the market for some refinement, more attention to comfort, and less edgy performance, then the Golf R may be your cup of tea.

The exterior of the cars are also styled in different realms. The STI features a large rear wing, large and wide fender arches, and a very aggressive front-end that seems like it’s happy to see you every time you open up the garage. The Golf R features subtle styling cues to retain its classic Golf silhouette, slight tweaks here and there, smoother lines, and a more subtle, clean front and rear fascias.

The Golf R does not scream, “Look at me,” like the STI does but rather, only draws attention to those who know what their are looking at. Check out the video made by EverydayDriver on their comparison between the two new rivals. While the decision between the two may be easy or difficult for those who are in the market; one thing for sure, they are both highly capable machines fit to take on the modern world.
