The Mount Washington Hillclimb Auto Race, also known as the Climb to the Clouds, is a timed hillclimb auto race up the Mount Washington Auto Road to the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire.
Now billed as one of the oldest motorsports events in the United States, the Climb to the Clouds was first run in 1904, seven years before the first 500-mile race at the Brickyard in Indianapolis and 12 years prior to the inaugural Pikes Peak Hillclimb in Colorado.
Here we watch Team Subaru’s David Higgins, Craig Drew, Chrissie Beavis, and Travis Pastrana as they attempt to best their times from the previous event, though new restrictions for the open class cars in the form of both reduced power and increased weight will make that a tough feat indeed.
Along with the race prepped WRX STIs, there’s a number of other bespoke hill climb racers that’re gunning for the top spot, including a custom build dubbed “The Super Chicken”, which sports a wild array of aero bits and reportedly poses the biggest threat to establish a new record lap time.
Even with the new restrictions, it’s still almost unbelievable that drivers and co-drivers can stay in sync with instructions continuously being dished out at a furious pace – especially during the high speed tarmac sections of the course.
Ultimately it narrows down to a two horse race between team mates Pastrana and Higgins for the lap record. Scope out the clip above to see how the intense hill climb action pans out.
