Getting older does not necessarily mean you have slowed down in life. According to Walter Röhrl, at 67 years young, he puts other professional drivers half his age to shame while taking the new Audi rally cross car for a spin.
For those of us not familiar with the name, He is a two-time World Rally Champion who piloted an Audi Sport Quattro S1 back in the day. Walter has driven in rally races that have taken place in numerous countries. He was invited by two-time DTM Touring Car Champion, Mattias Ekstrom, to test drive his new Audi S1 EKS RX Quattro rally car around the Estering Rally Cross track in Germany. With a span of 30 years between the two machines and drivers, Röhrl was able to show Ekstrom up as he rode shotgun in his own new rally machine around the track.
At the age of 67, Röhrl still has his motorsport senses in check. During one of the laps, Ekstrom mentioned that Rörhl took one of the corners faster and better than himself. In the video you can see Röhrl driving around the highly impressed Ekstrom as he is amazed at how well Walter still drives. It’s great to watch his hands and feet work together in harmony as he pilots the Audi EKS RX Quattro.
We have all seen rally videos on the internet, and rally racing requires split second reflexes. Often times, one millisecond can spell disaster in the rally world as drivers slide and jump their four wheel drive machines over various surfaces. This goes to show that aging comes with finely tuned senses. The skills shown in this video are hypnotizing in a way, as the car throws dirt and gravel around the track. We had to watch it twice.
