We met up with the guys from KONI on the floor of the SEMA show today to check out their new assortment of shocks, struts an coilovers. Like many other manufacturers, the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ are the focal point of their new product line. “The FR-S is a great car and there is so much support out there for them right now,” said Lee Grimes of KONI.
On display was their yellow sport struts which replace the entire factory strut assembly with an an adjustable KONI unit. “Our KONI Sport line really fits that [car] well because they are very streetable but the adjustment is so big,” said Grimes. “After tires, shocks are the next biggest thing for a track car.
There was also Koni’s patented and well known “Cut-A-Strut” system at the show. This system utilizes the factory strut housing but allows the user to modify it to accept a KONI-supplied adjustable strut insert. KONI even released a youtube video (available ) showing how to properly install the system. “The process is a lot less daunting than it seems,” according to Grimes. This is the first time there’s been an official video out there.”
Also displayed in KONI’s booth was a Factory Five GTM rocking the companies race-proven dampers. The GTM is a kit car based on a Chevrolet Corvette running gear that is coupled to a Porsche transaxle for a mid-engine layout.
Koni has been in the shock-making business for over 150 years and produces shocks/struts and coil overs for just about every form of motorsports around. For more information on products and vehicle fitments, make sure to visit their website.
