The Fox body Mustang enjoyed a long and tumultuous life. This body style and platform remained mostly the same for 14 years of production. Sure Ford updated the car a couple of times, even giving fans the rebirth of a V8 with some horsepower, and the ’93 Cobra. Largely the Fox stayed the same, and the Mustang name narrowly escaped cancellation during those years.

Recently, we came across this montage of B-roll footage of Fox body Mustangs from 1986 to 1990. The footage was put together by Ford’s ad agency, or internally by Ford itself, for use in national and local television ads. Designed to look like almost any small town or even a major city, the footage is vague, and generally shows the cars cruising down city streets or country roads.

Aside from the cheesy 80s style synthesizer music, there’s no sound, and it likely wasn’t provided with the original clips.

The video is an interesting glimpse into how Ford marketed the pony car nearly 30 years ago verses how we see it marketed today. There are some similarities, but we can’t help but laugh at some of the images and close ups used. The long pause, tight angle, on the back of the GT convertible, or the close up of office building reflected in the quarter glass of a four-cylinder coupe.

For Fox body fans, this is a cool glimpse at the past, and an interesting perspective on how things have changed.
