On Friday July 11^th and the weekend that followed, thousands of classic car enthusiasts celebrated the annual National Collector Car Appreciation Day all over the country. But, while most celebrations included car shows and BBQs, Hagerty Classic Cars’ celebration of classic vehicles entailed a little bit more of a throwback to the past. In the era when drag racing was in its early stages, school kids went to sock hops and hot rods ruled the roads, gas was dirt cheap, at least by today’s standards. So what better way to celebrate classic cars than to offer fuel for enthusiasts’ vintage classics at a price more fitting of the car’s model year?

Well, that’s exactly what Hagerty Classic Car magazine did, taking over a Mobil station in Detroit, Michigan on July 11^th and selling gas at prices based on the model year of event participants’ vehicles.

Of course, with vintage gas prices also comes vintage service ideals, so Hagerty went all out and trained some of its staff on how to be gas station attendants, right down to the uniform and personal service.

With gas prices skyrocketing into the $4 and $5 range, classic car owners were plenty excited about filling up their tanks for cheap, but even more than the fuel price, the event participants enjoyed the throwback to a simpler time. Now if only Hagerty would show up in all our communities and offer cheap gas…..
