Last week, a began making its way around the web featuring Jay Leno chronicling his favorite Mustangs of the last 50 years in honor of the iconic birthday. Among the famous enthusiast’s picks were the original 1964½ Mustang, Steve McQueen’s Bullitt, the Mustang SVO, and the 2012 Laguna Seca. Well, in the spirit of the Mustang’s silver anniversary, your favorite editors here at StangTV have produced their own lists of the Top 10 Mustangs of all time.
Editor Don Creason, Editorial Director Mark Gearhart, and Tech Editor Jason Reiss are all in the 34-40 year old demographic and grew up around the same Mustangs so their lists might reflect that fact. There were a few Mustangs they could all agree upon, and several differences of opinion. Check them out!
1984-1986 Mustang SVO – Our editors could all agree on the SVO because, as Mark puts it, “it proved Fox body Mustangs could be built to handle, it looked different, and it also proved it didn’t have to have a V8 to go fast.” The ’86 SVO made Don’s list because it was the last of its kind, and is “an incredible but misunderstood car”.
2003-2004 Mustang Cobra – The “Terminator” made the list because “it blew away even the Cobra R in terms of all-out power from just a few years earlier,” according to Mark, and Don thinks that it proved that Ford could build a powerful and nearly indestructible Mustang while remaining affordable. Jason agreed with both these statements.
2011 Mustang GT – The return of the 5.0 engine and the introduction of the Coyote made the ’11 GT a shoe-in.
2013-2014 Shelby GT500 – Producing a whopping 662 horsepower, it offers insane performance with a low price point – half the price of most of its competition when introduced.
It was so hard to come to an agreement that we decided to show you where the StangTV editors differed in opinions. Here are their personal choices to round out the Top 10.
Mark Gearhart
2000 Cobra R – “It set the bar high for performance.”
1993 Cobra – “The first major SVT project, the Fox showed what SVT was capable of.”
1987-1993 LX 5.0 Notchback – “The cars that got the performance craze for late model Mustangs really going: lightweight, easy to bolt on, fast for the money.”
1965 GT350 – “Shelby’s first foray into making the Pony car a race car.”
2011+ Boss 302 – “An awesome Mustang worth well over the list price.” Don concurs.
1970 Boss 429 – “The benchmark for Mustang performance, even today.”
While Jason agrees with Mark on the 2000 Cobra R, ‘87-‘93 LX 5.0 Notchback and ‘70 Boss 429 belonging on the list, he also listed the following.
1970 Boss 302 – Ford goes Trans Am Racing.
1982 GT – “The Boss is back! The return of the 302 engine and a nod towards what was coming in a few years.”
1986 GT – Don also listed it, as it was the first multi-port EFI car, the last of the four-eyes, and the first with an 8.8 rear, and real dual exhaust.
1965 K-Code – “The original high-performance Mustang.”
1969 BOSS 302 – “These were just plain bad on the street and the road course.”
1993 Cobra R – “The rarest of the Cobras and the last hurrah for the Fox body Mustang.”
1996 Cobra – “The first DOHC engine in a Mustang, produced 305 hp and is the basis for where we are today.”
