Should we really be encouraging teenagers to take on tens of thousands of debt to study the drumming techniques indigenous Amazonian tribes? Then again, a good education can go a long way in today’s world, it’s just a matter of picking the right major.

The students at Hennessey’s Tuner School have a garage for a classroom, and their homework is building a turbo kit for a 5.0 Mustang. That’s the kind of take-home exam we wouldn’t mind.

Having built a reputation for performance, Hennessey is expanding its offerings to include a course on how to build performance cars and keep them running properly. The course seems to include every aspect of automotive modification, from welding up downpipes to running the car on the dyno. The turbocharged Mustang makes a mighty sound as it spins up on the roller, and the delight on students’ faces is obvious as they all rush over to see the numbers.

This is an education with practical, real-world applications that will give the students the skills needed to make it in the world. Welding is a skill in demand practically everywhere, and there will always be plenty of speed freaks that need to get their cars running right. Oh, and apparently part of the course includes drag strip time. Makes that summer course on Norman Mailer seem a lot less exciting in comparison.
