Video: In-Depth With the 2015 Mustang Aerodynamics

Engineers who were brought on board the 2015 Ford Mustang project had their work cut out for them. Not only did they have to build a successor to the best generation of Mustangs yet, but they had to do so while taking into account unprecedented shifts in consumer attitudes and fuel economy standards. To design a car that is both powerful, efficient, and aerodynamic is no easy task.

aero-3But Ford did it, and the 2015 Mustang came out looking like a real stunner, thanks to the countless hours of wind tunnel work that went into sculpting its sexy shape.

aero-4The goal going into the 2015 Mustang was to reduce aerodynamic drag significantly, while still achieving the look and feel designers were hoping for. One of the hardest parts of designing the 2015  Mustang was to reconcile the aerodynamics with was the sharknose front end. Thanks to some clever engineering, designers were able to make it the slickest snout yet.

Other features, like the automatic grille shutters on EcoBoost models, help reduce air pressure in the engine bay alongside the functional hood vents, which let that extra pressure out. There’s also the front wheel aero curtains, which accelerate the air over the wheel and reduces the overall drag forces, improving performance and fuel economy. There are three different underbody valance and shields, one for each engine. Even the sideview mirror construction was revisited to reduce road noise and buffeting.

A lot of work went into the aerodynamics of the 2015 Mustang, and it sure looks like it’ll all pay off, we can’t wait to get behind the wheel.
