Over the last few weeks, we’ve watched as Rick Drewry from American Modern has followed the engine for The Build’s 1965 Malibu SS through the teardown and cleaning process at Smyth Automotive. But now the time has come to start putting the engine back together, a process we saw beginning last week with the assembly of the cylinder heads.

Well, this week we’re moving on to the block itself as Tony and Rick prep the engine for its new camshaft and seal it up for all its lifeblood. Check out the process .

Before you can really start assembling an engine, you have to make sure that it will retain its most important component- the oil- as well as keep it moving properly throughout the engine block.

The first step of this process is to fit the cleaned engine with new cam bearings, making sure they seat properly and mesh well with the new camshaft. Once fitted into place, it’s vital that you check that the bearings don’t catch the camshaft while spinning.

Sealing up the engine is your next step. First its freeze out plugs and then core plugs, making sure every bit of fluid put into the engine will stay where it belongs.

Now that the 396ci big block is sealed up and on the engine stand, it’s time to move on to assembling the rest of the engine. But you’ll have to wait until next week for that!
