Not too long ago, we wrote an article about the hubbub over a tweet made on July 23rd by film producer Dana Brunetti: “One that I have been after for over 3 years. Finally.”

Attached to that tweet was the surprising revelation that the Sony Corporation, which owns and builds the PlayStation (which Gran Turismo is partnered with), had given the green light to a movie that would draw inspiration from the Gran Turismo universe. Since then, there had been several speculative accounts as to how the movie’s plot would play out, with most believing the film would simply follow in the footsteps of “big, dumb” blockbusters like the Fast and Furious franchise.

Where other upcoming, franchise, car-based flicks like Transformers 4 and Need for Speed have a great deal of stories to draw upon, no one was quite sure how GT would do the same. Sony recently put those fears to rest at Gamescom, a trade fair for video games, in Cologne, Germany.

Reports say that the plot will revolve around the amazing true story of Lucas Ordonez, a Spanish youth and diehard GT fan who went from gamer to driver in a matter of months. While not the true movie trailer, Sony’s promotional shows a lot of promise for what could be one of the greatest video-game-adaptation films ever made.

And with the producers of The Social Network working behind the scenes, it’s easier to breathe knowing that the film will not devolve into the tired tropes of sex and violence. Rather, the movie looks like it will stay true to its source material: the thrill of cars, racing, and doing what it takes to succeed.
