Now that the crew of The Build has moved forward to start the rebuild process of their engine, they’ve had to dive even deeper into the inspection process. Last week, the engine checked out well at Smyth Automotive and then went off to the bake oven to strip all the old paint and dirt away with the intention of giving the 1965 Malibu SS a fresh start. After checking to make sure that the engine was cooled down to room temperature, the guys at Smyth Automotive uncaged the Chevy big block and sent if off to be shot blasted with tiny fragments of steel. Just like with the sand blasting of the Malibu’s undercarriage and frame, shot blasting the engine specifically aims to remove any last bit of debris from the block’s walls.

Once the block was blasted, it was on to the magnafluxing station, where with the help of a magnetized base and magnetic powder, the guys at Smyth were able to determine that the block was free of cracks, even though the engine had been impacted when the Malibu was in its previous wreck.

Lucky for the American Modern crew, this means that the engine is safe to move forward on, allowing the true build process to begin. Be sure to check back for next week’s Malibu Monday to see what the crew of The Build is up to next.
