The term big muscle can refer to a variety of things. If you’re talking about weight classes, it can mean athletes beefed out to an unbelievable level. For cars, it can mean huge amounts of horsepower. But in a different take on the term, big muscle can also refer to a classic car bulging in size like the 1959 Pontiac Bonneville featured in this week’s episode of Muscle on the DRIVE network. Owned by Chuck Cushner, this vintage Pontiac acts as a brief look into the good ‘ole days, days when style and design were more important than cranking out 15 more horsepower than the competitor and icons were inevitably born.

Pristine from the factory, this particular 4-finned beauty didn’t always share a privileged life.

Found in someone’s backyard after sitting for about 15 years, the Bonneville was in less than perfect shape when Cushner picker her up. Since then, however, a mighty restoration has brought her back to her glory days, complete with numbers-matching 289ci engine boasting 300hp.

Virtually stock as far as the eye can see, this big beauty has two modern touches that are unmistakable. The first is the paint job. Slathered in Lamborghini Orange, the classic Pontiac plays the modern classic game as good as the rest. The other upgrade comes in the form of a Ridetech airbag suspension, which gives the vintage wide-track an even more cushy ride.

Certainly not everyone’s idea of big muscle, Cushner’s Bonneville brings to light the simple joy of classic cars, no matter what’s under the hood. And if any car can succeed at making dreams come true, it’s this one.
