When Ford rolled out the 2013 Shelby GT500 with 662 horsepower from its new supercharged 5.8 liter V8, the Mustang aftermarket was put on notice. Suddenly shops like Saleen, Steeda, and ROUSH needed to step their games up in order to remain competitive with the factory bruiser. Well step up they did, and the ROUSH RS3 Mustang with the Phase 3 supercharged Aluminator engine has stepped into the ring (or rather, the dragstrip) with the 662 horsepower Shelby.

Ray Skillman Performance Ford brought us this video, and also supplied two drag racers, Bill and Drew Skillman, to put these two mean Mustangs to the test. John Trischler provides the play-by-play as these two muscle machines duke it out for Ford domination. 

Before we get into the results, let’s talk stats. As already mentioned, the 2014 Shelby GT500 has 662 hp and 631 ft-lbs of torque, paired with an advanced launch control system, big Brembo brakes, and (unfortunately) a solid rear-axle. Top speed? 202 mph, and outlets have regularly knocked out 11-second quarter-miles.

And then there is the ROUSH RS3 Mustang with the Phase 3 option, a 675 hp supercharged Aluminator engine. Yup, it is actually more powerful than the Shelby, and it has unique tires designed in conjunction with Cooper to put most of that power to the ground. Larger front and rear coil springs, a larger front stabilizer bar and an anti-wheel hop upper control arm all make a big difference out on the drag strip.

How big of a difference? Well once Drew Skillman in the RS3 figures out that leaving the traction control on is a good thing, the races suddenly become much closer than you might expect. This is one of those cool videos we could watch all day with two high powered Ford heavyweights going at it down the quarter-mile, superchargers howling, and exhaust blaring.
