A perfectly executed slide job can be a thing of beauty in any type of dirt track race car.  However, when a slide job goes wrong the consequences can be spectacular.  This was certainly the case at the King’s Royal on Saturday night at Eldora Speedway in NRA Sprint Invaders action when a slide job went horribly wrong.  In heat race #4 Jared Horstman in his #17 went to throw a slider on Dustin Stroup’s #10X sprint car in turn four.  Horstman did not clear Stroup and ran over his left front tire which broke Stroup’s front end and sent Horstman’s machine sideways.

Horstman’s right rear tire dug in to the track and catapulted his sprint car into the air.  His sprint car flipped more than two times in mid air before it finally came back down to earth.  Horstman’s car slammed into the ground and rolled one more time before coming to rest on the wheels next to the catch fence.  The spectacular flip silenced the crowd for a moment as the safety crew worked to get Horstman out of his mangled sprint car.  

He finally emerged from the wreckage unhurt and under his own power.  The chassis of Horstman’s sprint car was trashed in the accident as the downtube was badly bent among other broken parts.  The accident served as a reminder to never take your eyes off the track when sprint cars are racing as all it takes is one bad slide job to trash two race cars.  Check out the great video courtesy of Eldora Speedway.
