Malibu Monday: First Steps to Frame Perfection!

Last week, we checked in with our friends on The Build as they were separating the engine from the frame for their ultimate restoration project, and this week, it’s just as much work! Check out the next step of the restoration of The Build’s 1965 Malibu SS in the above.

Although there wasn’t much left of this burn-out GTO, it made for the perfect frame donor for the American Modern crew’s 1965 Malibu SS project!

As we all know, the frame is one of the most important components in a vehicle. Not only is it the platform that everything is built from, it also keeps everything connected and the vehicle rigid. Unfortunately, when the Malibu came to American Modern Insurance Group, it was in bad shape and the frame ended up being too far gone to repair (remember, the car previously had a run-in with a brick wall).  So Claims Specialist Rick Drewry scouted out a used frame that could be restored and used under the classic Chevy. What resulted was the frame from another GM A-body, a GTO convertible.

Now that the  frame has been completely rid of the GTO’s burnt-up pieces, it’s now ready for the attention it deserves. So the American Modern crew took to the wire brushes and grinders to clean up the old base and make it like new.

Once the first layer of grime and paint was removed, the American Modern crew moved on to the sandblaster for a more complete clean when they finished.

It’s dirty work,  but someone’s got to do it and the American Modern crew seems more than happy to be moving forward on their project. Be sure to check back next Monday as the American Modern crew finishes us their frame prep and moves along even more on their Malibu project car.

Sand blasting is dirty work, but at the end of the day, the American Modern crew had smiles on their faces.
