The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series double-header at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas got off to a very exciting start on Wednesday night. Donny Schatz was able to pace the field in the early going of the 30-lap feature event while the rest of the field battled hard for position. Behind him a great battle was raging between Jason Sides, Brian Brown, and Kyle Larson for the runner-up spot. A total of seven cautions would slow the pace of the race and end up playing a huge role in the final laps of the event. Sides was able to complete a pass of Schatz for the lead on lap 14 only to see a caution for Paul McMahan negate the pass and put him back in second place on the restart.

Then after another restart on lap 18 Larson was able to pass both Sides and Schatz to take the lead on the bottom of the track. Larson looked like he had the win in the bag as he was opening up a nice gap on Schatz and Sides. That was until Larson’s machine began to stumble on the last couple of laps as it was running out of fuel due to all of the caution laps. Schatz got around Larson on lap 28 as the two raced side by side for the last lap. Schatz would pull away for the win coming out of turn four as Larson’s car struggled for fuel and he was also passed by Sides for second as they came to the stripe. Check out the great video here and see how Larson almost got the win while running out of fuel.
