Some things just go better together. Peanut butter and jelly, ketchup and mustard, beer and football…all are examples of excellent combinations of awesome things. Yet some combinations, while great, take a special sort of genius to envision. Genius, skills, and a thick stack of cash.

This video above captures a truly rare, inventive, and downright wacky vehicle out in the wold; the 1987 Boater Home. Just 21 of these combination vans and boats were ever made, and at least one of the owners is still using his Boater Home as intended.

If you watch the video, brought to our attention by Carscoop, you’ll see an extended van backing down a boat launch. At first it looks like we’re about to see a repeat of truck-backs-into-the-water, but suddenly the van splits in half…and a boat takes off into the lake while the truck pulls out. What sort of black magic is this?

Not black magic, just science and engineering. The Boater Home is basically a custom boat carrier with a 28-foot V-hull boat attached to the back. Naturally this Boater Home still sports its kooky 80’s color customization. As you might imagine, on land the Boater Home doubles as an RV for those times when you aren’t on the water…but the real draw here obviously is the ability to take your boat and your home on the road with you.
