Video: A Saturn Sedan VS. A Cannonball

Launched in 1985 as a “New kind of car company,” General Motor’s Saturn division never really gained traction with consumers. It was probably the first company GM decided to ax during their 2009 bankruptcy proceedings.

The most memorable feature of Saturn cars were there undentable body panels. But how do these panels hold up against a cannonball?

As it turns out, not very well! YouTube star Richard Ryan of RatedRR decided to see what sort of damage he could do with an old Saturn, a much older cannon, and a high-speed camera to slow down the action. The result is the above video, which is endlessly entertaining.

The video was inspired by the upcoming video game, Assassin’s Creed 3, which is set during the Revolutionary War. Yet Ryan decided to up the ante and instead of a Revolutionary War six-pound cannon, he used a 12-pounder instead for more killing power. The poor Saturn never really stood a chance.

Rather than go up against the plastic body panels, Ryan aimed the 12-pound cannon right at the engine block, with metal-shattering results. Not only are we surprised at how accurate the cannon was, but how complete and utter the destruction was. The cannon ball went right through the engine block, and the rest of the car, before burying itself in a mound of sand behind the vehicle.

Total and utter carnage, just the way we like it.
