It had been 10 years since Brian Birkhofer had captured the biggest crown jewel event of his career at the 2003 World 100 with a dramatic last lap pass of Scott Bloomquist. Birkhofer wold have to wait 10 years for another triumph at the “Grandaddy of them all”, but history would almost repeat itself on Saturday night as Birkhofer conquered the 123 drivers in attendance and Bloomquist would yet again finish 2nd to “Birky.”
Birkhofer held off Bloomquist after a dramatic last 15 laps that saw a multitude of double file restarts.
“Side-by-side restarts throw a wrinkle in it,” Birkhofer said. “Usually the leader kind of gets his spot. Here you have to kind of dictate … make one mistake and he’s beside you and takes the lead. The crowd is walking away hopefully thinking they saw an awesome race and the place will be packed again next year. That’s all that matters.”
“When Earl (Baltes) had the track it’d get slow to 18-19 seconds. It was kinda slow and real finesse,” Birkhofer said. “Now it’s get your elbows up (and get on the wheel). It’s just a different style of racing. With me growing up in Iowa, I had to do a lot of finesse ‘cause the places got slick and they’re flat. I guess this will bring me back a couple more years.”
Early in the race Don O’Neal and Billy Moyer seemed to have some very strong cars, both would lead laps before each one of them fell out due to mechanical issues.
