Todd Erwin’s Slick Super Stock Chevy Cobalt

Todd Erwin and his father Darrell, have always been big NHRA Super Stock fans. Their favorite body style of car for this type of racing is the Chevy Cobalt. When Todd had the chance to pick up a cherry 2008 Cobalt SS for Super Stock racing, he took advantage of the situation and ended up with a stunning vehicle.

Pete Peery, a fellow Super Socker racer and family friend, let Todd know about this particular Cobalt. The car was being built for another racer, but they decided to step away from the project. This was the golden opportunity that Todd and his father were looking for to own a killer Cobalt Super Stocker.

This wasn’t a big stretch for Todd to have a car like this built. His family has always been into cars and powersports, even his mom and sister love cars. Todd’s father has been drag racing since he was a teenager, so it just made sense for them to move into a state-of-the-art Super Stocker.

Kenny Turner from Laughlin Metal Designs was selected as the captain of the project, and he built most of the car. Turner built the rear suspension around a Moser Fab 9 rearend that’s filled with 40-spline axles and other Moser goodies. A set of Lamb shocks and springs round out the rear suspension. Up front, you’ll find a pair of Lamb GT Struts. The Cobalt is brought to a stop by a full set of Lamb brakes. A set of WELD Racing wheels and Hoosier tires keeps the Cobalt rolling down the track.

To power the Cobalt, Todd picked up a Paterson Elite COPO 427 LS-based engine. Paterson Elite used an LSX block, Carillo rods, Callies crank, Hogan intake, and other top-tier parts to finish the engine. The fuel system is built around an Aermotive A1000 brushless fuel pump and regulator. A Pro trans TH350 and ATI torque converter round out the drivetrain. A Holley EFI system controls the engine and monitors its vitals.

A lot of effort was put into this build by Todd and Darrel. This Cobalt is super clean and is the perfect example of what a late-model Super Stocker should look like.
