The path to a sportsman world championship in drag racing just got more competitive and more lucrative. The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) has announced several updates for its Summit Racing Series World Championship, including a purse increase, a new team competition, and the inclusion of more racers from Canada, all set for the main event in Las Vegas from October 30 to November 2.
The Summit Racing Series World Championship, held during the NHRA Nevada Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, brings together 32 of the best grassroots racers who have won their respective Summit Racing ET Finals.
This year, the prize money gets a big boost. Winners in the four categories—Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and Motorcycle—will now take home $6,000. For the first time at this event, other top finishers will also get a larger share, with $2,000 going to the runner-up and $500 to semifinalists in each class. In total, the event payout has increased by $15,000 from last year. They’ve also added a first-ever team championship. All seven NHRA divisions and a Canadian team will earn points based on round wins by their racers, with a $2,000 prize for the top-scoring team. The NHRA is also adding bonus awards in the early rounds, rewarding the best-losing package in the opening round and the best reaction time in the second round for each class.
The field of competitors is also expanding. For the first time, winners from the Eastern Canada Division will advance to the Las Vegas championship, joining the champions from the seven U.S.-based NHRA divisions. “We’ve seen a lot of exciting additions to the series, and it’s terrific to have the Canadian racers as part of it,” said Jim Greenleaf, Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports & Events Manager.
The 32 finalists will also be treated to a number of unique experiences, including a welcome dinner and raffles for opportunities like warming up a 12,000-horsepower Funny Car or joining a pro team’s crew during a qualifying run. With more money, more ways to win, and more racers involved, the battle to become an NHRA Summit Racing Series World Champion in Las Vegas is set to be more intense than ever.
