It’s the matchup everyone’s talking about: can a cutting-edge high-performance hybrid, boosted to the extreme, keep up with the silent, instant punch of a top-tier EV? Boost District, known for pushing the C8 Corvette platform to its limits, decided to answer that question, pitting its record-holding twin-turbo C8 E-Ray against a formidable challenger: a Tesla Model S Plaid.
The battleground was the Texas Motorplex. In one corner, the Boost District E-Ray boasts forged pistons and a twin-turbo setup, but is notably running a stock camshaft for this outing. They even added a boost controller specifically for this test.
In the other corner, Mr. Jack’s 2022 Plaid, prepared for battle with simple but effective mods: weight reduction. He removed all the seats aside from the driver seat, of course, and added stickier tires.
From the get-go, the Tesla laid down blistering times. “These things have been known to run 9.4s, 9.3s, 9.2s,” said Poptani. They all watched as the Plaid clocked incredible passes, ultimately achieving the best run of the day at 9.27 seconds in the quarter mile, leaving Roshan shocked.
The heavily modified E-Ray – despite grappling with a newly installed boost controller, which was setup a “little too timid and conservative” – put up a valiant fight. It ripped down the track to a best of 9.38 seconds at 151 miles-per-hour during the session – incredibly quick, but just shy of the Plaid’s ultimate pace on this day.
“We did not have enough for the Tesla this time around,” the Poptani admitted, acknowledging they were about a tenth behind.
Poptani praised the Plaid’s performance but pointed out the key difference: “The beautiful part about this car [the E-Ray] is that we can mod it unlike the Tesla.” With plans to dial in the boost and potentially add more power, they promised to come out swinging the next track session.
This round goes to the EV, showcasing the incredible straight-line speed possible with minimal mods thanks to its instant torque and superior traction management right out of the box. But the hybrid Corvette, with its potential for further tuning, lives to fight another day. What are your thoughts on this electrifying matchup? Let us know what you think about this showdown.
