A new race car is like a new baseball mitt — it needs to be broken in before it can perform its best. The shakedown period for a race car can be difficult, and Armando Guzman experienced the worst-case scenario when he went for a wild ride in his Toyota Corolla. The crash didn’t stop Guzman, though, as he had the boosted Corolla known as “Vaccine” back at the track one week after his crash.

Guzman is a seasoned no-prep racer that has run on some of the sketchiest surfaces imaginable, so he knows how to get his car down the track. At the Battle Of South Mountain no-prep race, Guzman was still getting a handle on Vaccine and going rounds when disaster struck: Vaccine was on a solid pass when it made a big move to the right that Guzman wasn’t expecting. The Corolla darted across the track, hit the guardrail, rolled on its top, and slid back across the track. Thankfully, Guzman’s safety gear did its job and he walked away from the wild ride.

A crash like this would set most racers back months, but Guzman isn’t most racers. He got to work on Vaccine, pulling dents, replacing glass, and scavenging parts off his old race car to get the Corolla back into fighting shape. The hard work paid off and Guzman was back racing just a week later at a cash days event.
