If you’re like the crew at TURNology, then you have some sort of tow vehicle to lug around your no-longer-street-legal race car. The money spent on keeping it legal for the road now goes into performance parts, tires, and a towing rig to get the car from the garage to the track.

Now that your caged, gutted, and air-conditioning-delete race car needs to be hauled long distances, Titan Fuel Tanks has come to the rescue in many ways to make tow rig logistics easy. We talked with Titan at SEMA Show 2019 about how its products benefit road racers and our conversation was a real eye-opener.

“We go as far as getting DOT data on how long the average stop is for long-distance highway travel during development,” says Marketing Director, Mike DeFord. “At around 30 minutes per stop, it adds up when you have a small factory tank on your tow rig over a long distance. Adding a Titan Fuel Tanks unit with double the capacity means fewer stops and wasted time for diesel tow rigs.”

It was at that point, we had to ask about the gasoline-powered trucks used to tow race cars and the long-range extending tanks for that market. DeFord pointed out there is no market for them because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and DOT shut them down for safety concerns. Gasoline is highly flammable, whereas diesel is not, and therefore all larger tanks in factory locations are for diesel trucks only. Basically, that decision process was also hinged on the reliance of diesel in other industries such as trucking and farming too, so the lack of restrictions here definitely helps.

Although Titan offers a variety of diesel truck tanks and the aux tank we featured for taking more fuel to the track, we wanted to use the popular 2013-2020 RAM diesel truck as an example. Whether in 2500 or 3500 ratings configured as a Crew Cab, these Cummins-powered trucks can get a range-extending 52-gallon diesel tank under the chassis. The fitment of this tank uses all of the same mounting points and hardware, making it a direct replacement for the factory tank and 100-percent ready to use safely and reliably.

We did some quick math with the new tank since the stock tank in a RAM 3500, for example, is 26 gallons. The range of the factory tank says it’s all highway rated of 24mpg should be around 624 miles but this new diesel tank is double the size, meaning the range leaps to around 1,248 miles! That is a lot of miles, and well, essentially half the stops needed for refueling, too. All in theory, of course, because your mileage may vary depending on many factors and the conditions.

Titan makes tanks for RAM, Ford, Chevy, GMC, and more. All tanks are made in the USA at its facility in Idaho Falls, Idaho. An avid road racer himself, DeFord pointed out to us, “EVERY track is far from Idaho,” making him and some of his fellow racers reliant on the TITAN products to extend their diesel race car tow rig range. No matter which manufacturer you support — Ford, Chevy, GMC, or RAM — hauling a race car with the added range a Titan Fuel Tanks gives is a benefit we can all finally agree on!
