In the mood for a wild and weird off-road adventure, but want to bring a few of the creature comforts of home into the great outdoors? If so, chances are you are probably cross-shopping camper trailers, and are already hip to one of the most customizable, capable, and highly rated trailer specialists of modern times: Turtleback Trailers.
Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, this all-American camping powerhouse specializes in the designing, building, testing, and selling of bespoke pop-up tent trailers for 4×4 fanatics. At the top of the turtle, stack sits The Expedition Trailer, which is the largest offering within the Turtleback Trailer portfolio and can accommodate up to six. After that, there is the mid-range Adventure model, with its partially grounded tent and medium footprint.
Finally, there is The Getaway Trailer, the company’s smallest and most affordable camper, which once set up provides elevated sleeping accommodations. Weighing in at just 1,300 pounds, and measuring just 130 inches long this little guy is a great starting point if you are just getting into overlanding and are not interested in towing a massive rig.
From powder coating and custom wheel and tire combos to bespoke camping amenities, the checklist for ordering one of these trailers is impressive to say the least. While the customizable options for all of Turtleback Trailers’ offerings appear virtually endless, there is one thing that really captured our attention: The option to upgrade your trailer with custom, dual-rate Hyperco Coil springs.
Custom Hyperco Coils on Turtleback Trailers
Traditional trailers do not support heavy articulation, thus placing an enormous amount of strain on the hitch. Until recently, allowing a trailer to pack ample amounts of wheel travel significantly increased your chance of the rig tipping due to suspension rebound.
Turtleback has negated much of this effect by pairing a one-off trailing arm suspension setup with custom-tuned ICON Vehicle Dynamics remote reservoir shocks and Hyperco progressive rate coil springs. There is also an adjustable spring location which allows you to tune spring rates for varying loads, thus negating the need to tinker with air lines and whatnot, while Daystar Products kevlar bushings tie it all together.
To quote one veteran overlander upon the completion of an off-road test with a Hyperco Coil outfitted Turtleback Trailer, “What it lacks in adjustability (without airbags), it makes up for in reliability and overall wheel travel. Custom valved, remote reservoir Icon shocks control damping. The Hyperco coils can be moved to three different positions depending on the load and desired ride height.”
So how much does this kick-ass off-road upgrade run you might ask? About two grand all told. This may seem like a lot to some, but with trailers starting at $11,500 and going all the way up to well over $30,000 once fully loaded, Turtleback Trailer build options go as deep as the pockets of the buyer. While obtaining this sort of extravagant overlanding lifestyle remains dependent upon one’s bank account, Turtleback Trailers has made it extremely easy to purchase its products via financing and nothing due at signing.
