Video: Gingium’s Rally Miata Build

Vehicle builds are what make automotive enthusiasm so enjoyable. Away from the bean counting and strict government regulations, one can build his own unique take on a vehicle and give it all of the horsepower and prowess he desires. Such is the case of Caleb Sandlund, also known as Gingium on YouTube. 2018 was a year of builds for the young man, and one of them was a 1993 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Caleb first got the vehicle back in Febuary of 2017. He wanted to get in on the craze of lifted Miatas that he saw popping up on Instagram, and decided to go one step further by prepping a Miata to actually go off-road. The 1.6-liter inline four is good for 115 horsepower and 100 lb-ft of torque, which is more than enough for a car just barely over 2,000 pounds.

What followed was months of blood, sweat and tears, as Caleb got the Miata lifted, trimmed out the extra metal, putting in skid plates and bash bars, fixing the rust, swapping out the seats, and so on. During this time, he also took care of getting a modicum of caging done to the car, and got the little four-banger supercharged, too.

Naturally, Caleb took opportunities to get the car bashed on, too. In addition to taking the Miata exploring in the hills and local trails, Caleb also entered into RallyCross events, where it was slow going at the start, but eventually, Caleb got the hang of it.

The Miata has had its ups and downs, the same as any other project car. But what we like is that Caleb has always kept on it, and still has it to this day. Go check out his channel to see all of his videos, and check out his playlist dedicated to the Miata build.
