For those not familiar with Adam Carolla from CarCast, the former host of The Man Show and Loveline is crazy about cars. So obsessed with cars, specifically IMSA giants from the ’70s and ’80s, that he picked up one of Paul Newman’s old Porsche 935s for a cool $4.4M back in 2016 — a kingly sum he had to sell a collection of vintage Lamborghinis for.

Fortunately, Carolla hasn’t put this Le Mans class winner in air-conditioned storage to keep it pristine, but rather, he’s decided to thrash it just like its former owner used to. As a result, the Hawaiian Tropic-liveried 935 has become a regular sight at Laguna Seca and Goodwood over the last few years. Carolla shows no signs of slowing as he threads it through a field of fast Porsches at this year’s Rennsport in the footage above.

Still, it seems to take more than a couple of years to master a car like this; a twin-turbo 935 is something that does take a talented hand, as we learned recently in this interview with German GT and touring car driver, Ulrich Andree. Not only is there an abundance of power — some 589 horsepower and 437 lb-ft of torque, which is made quite progressively for the era — but, it does not have a lot of aerodynamic downforce. The bewinged body does keep the car stable at higher speeds — but not so planted that long lifts off the throttle don’t have consequences.

Carolla discovered this last weekend, where, after threading through a pack of less potent Porsches, he looped it easing the car into Turn 5. A fast, uphill left, this corner requires an early commitment and a confident management of the car in the middle and exit of the corner, where it can understeer just as easily as it can oversteer, due to a hint of adverse camber.

Unfortunately, Carolla dithered. The temperamental 935 clearly requires a strong grasp of the reins. Lingering indecisively off the throttle with the car loaded up in a quick corner caused a bit of lift-off oversteer that quickly became an irrecoverable spin.

Still, you’ve gotta tip your hat to a guy who pushes such an expensive icon this hard. With its history and his reverence for the late actor and racer, you can bet Carolla’s sentimentally attached, to say the least. To put it in the dirt at speed, then continue seemingly unfazed, is admirable.
