Tough Diamond: Rolls-Royce Cullinan, The Ultimate Luxury Off-Roader?

In the automotive world, Rolls-Royce is known for being the pinnacle of luxury. Most of their vehicles are designed as a no-expense-spared, explicitly-built-for-luxury experience. A lot of high-end automotive manufacturers have shifted toward making SUVs (Lamborghini, Maserati, Bentley, etc) and Rolls-Royce has followed the trend with their new Cullinan. It comes as no surprise that it has all of the luxury features you can think of. But, what may surprise you is its off-road performance

Luxury off-roaders aren’t anything new – take a look at Land Rover – but the level of off-road prowess Rolls-Royce managed to squeeze into the Cullinan is quite impressive.

The chassis is the same chassis used on the new Phantom. The suspension is independent front and rear, with airbags and electronically anti-roll bars and a four-wheel steering system for low-speed maneuverability. Of course, it also uses an all-wheel-drive system. None of this makes the Cullinan seem like it would be anything special off-road, but to prove everyone wrong, Rolls-Royce and National Geographic teamed up to create “The Final Challenge” which is a series of videos where the goal is to push the Cullinan to its limits on different types of terrains.

In the video series, the Cullinan is pushed in the cold mountainous terrain of Scotland and raced around in the dunes of Dubai, with a little bit of everything in between. Surprisingly, the Cullinan handled everything with ease, even complicated hills with lots of loose rocks which generally pose a tough situation for heavy vehicles. Granted, everything shown in the video could also be taken on by a Jeep, but Jeeps aren’t super-luxury SUVs, which further proves that the Cullinan really can do it all.
